Research Proposal
Applicants are expected to provide a one page research proposal (about 500 words) describing the type of work that they wish to carry out for their PhD research. Ideally this should be aligned with the research interests of the academic staff and should explain the motivation for the proposed work, as well as the general methods that could be employed, for example using numerical, theoretical or experimental methods.
Departmental Support for Research Students
All research students are provided with:
- access to a shared research student office
- photocopying and inter-library loan facilities
- supervisor(s) with expertise in the selected research area and a Director of Research to provide additional guidance and pastoral support; students can also consult any other Departmental academic staff if appropriate for their research
All research students:
- attend the seminar programme, to which external speakers are invited; we also have an internal programme of PGR especially for our PhD students. Typically, towards the end of their first and third years, each student makes a short presentation, followed by a question and answer session. All PhD students are expected to attend these seminars, so it is an excellent way to publicise and get feedback on your work
- must attend training courses as part of their skills development throughout their PhD to support their research. The Academic Supervisors together with the Graduate School provide structured help to make the most of the expected skills development
