Essential information
The application process
With the exception of the Art and Design Foundation Programme, applications for entry to all undergraduate programmes at Loughborough University must be made online through the Universities and College Admissions Service (UCAS). This applies to all UK, EU and international students.
If you are at school or college you will fill in an online application. After checking your details, and having added the academic reference, your school or college will submit the completed application online to UCAS.
Other UK applicants and those from outside the UK, who are not at school or college, can apply independently online, and will be responsible for obtaining and attaching an academic reference and for submitting the completed application online to UCAS.
When?
For entry in 2011, you should apply to UCAS between 1 September 2010 and 15 January 2011.
Applications received by the closing date receive equal consideration, but applicants are encouraged to apply early to receive an early response from the University. Applications received after the closing date may not receive the same level of consideration depending on places still available on the degree.
Loughborough’s institution name is LBRO, and our institution code is L79. The course code will depend on the degree to which you are applying. If you apply to more than one degree at Loughborough, each application will be assessed individually. Naturally, all applications are treated confidentially.
Once the academic department has decided to offer you a place, the University will send you a letter setting out what academic qualifications and grades you are going to need. UCAS will also write to you to confirm Loughborough’s offer. You don’t have to reply immediately to these offers, allowing you to give careful thought to your options before making a choice.
Interviews and visits
In most cases the University makes an offer based on your application form alone.
If you live in the UK and receive an offer you will normally be invited to visit us before replying to the offer. In some cases the department will ask you to an interview before they make an offer. In both cases these visits will enable you to see the campus, the department and its facilities, as well as give you an opportunity to speak to students and staff.
Transfer between programmes
When you apply to Loughborough University you will apply to study one particular degree.
In some cases you may be allowed to transfer to another degree as long as you meet the academic requirements of the new programme. However, this is not guaranteed. Transfer between variants of the same degree (for example, Civil Engineering BEng and Civil Engineering MEng) are arranged by the department concerned.
Deferred entry
Some students want to take a gap year and defer starting University for 12 months.
In most cases Loughborough University encourages this, provided the year is spent pursuing worthwhile activities. You can either apply for deferred entry when you submit your UCAS form, or, if you decide to take a gap year at a later stage, simply inform the University in writing as soon as possible.
