Inaugural lectures

Wednesday September 30, 2009 at 5.30pm - Lecture theatre T003, Wolfson School

Zero CO2 Transportation

Rob ThringProfessor Rob Thring, Department of Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering

Evidence of the need for a zero CO2 transportation has been published in for example the Energy White Paper, King Review, Stern Review, Eddington Review, Gallagher Review, IPCC, the committee on climate change and others.

Transport accounts for 22% of the total, and road vehicles account for 93% of this amount, and mostly consume petroleum.

In this lecture Rob will explore the areas of research that need to include the effect of zero CO2 transport on the economy, the national grid, and the humanitarian and social issues associated with the new technologies, as well as the search for solutions to the issues of transportation engineering.

His own research is being conducted in modelling of advanced technology vehicles, and several aspects of the application of fuel cells to vehicles including cheaper ways of making bi-polar plates, heat transfer and balance of plant issues.
